CNF @ 26% May 8, 2015 What would be interesting about the life of a poor clergyman' daughter from the Victorian era? 1) Her experiences and people at The Clergy Daughters' School inspired aspects of Jane Eyre's (the character) experiences at the fictional charity school Lowood. 2) She fell in love with a married man (Constantine Heger) who may have inspired the character M Paul Emmanuel from her novel "Villette" 3) She had a romance with her publisher George Smith Gaskell toned down the portrait of The Clergy Daughters' school to avoid legal action. Gaskell suppressed info about CBs feelings for CHeger because it would offend the public on moral grounds and cause distress for her still living father and husband. Gaskell suppressed all reference to CBs romance with George Smith because he was also the publisher for this biography. These are all very interesting details about Charlotte Bronte's life, perhaps for me, the only reasons for me to take an interest in the life of a Victorian clergyman' daughter. Since they are not included, I have decided to put this book aside. I can't think of any other reason why reading about CBs life would be of interest to me.

I've always been a Bronte fan but apart from the normal stuff you read all the while, I knew nothing about her life. I only really read this one as I have been working my way through Gaskells works. I did enjoy it for the insight into her life, which seems to me to have been that of a perpetual student. The reason for this being that the family talked always of starting their own school but it never came to anything. Gaskell knew CB and her family and as CB's father was still alive it was censored rather. But I still enjoyed it.
