One of the most sensible and interesting books about the supernatural that I have read in a very long time. Maxwell-Stuart takes the human need to believe in life after death (and thus ghosts and spirits) as his starting point and examines the way that these beliefs have changed and been adapted over the course of history. This volume works as a good basic introduction to the subject, and achieves in its aim of generally placing supernatural beliefs in their wider historical context, but the subject really demands a longer and more detailed treatment.

Author: I'm going to start a bit before the actual Reformation period and begin with some history of Geneva, because I find it interesting. Me: Oh, boy, this is gonna be tedious... Me, later: I'm gonna write a historical fiction novel about this because it's SO INTERESTING!!!! How do you review a book that's just narrating parts of history? Well, this one did a great job holding my attention. A few parts were a tad boring. At some parts, it read like a fiction novel. And the author did an excellent job portraying these real people. He pointed out the actions - good and bad - from both sides. Frankly, if a book makes me want to write a book after reading it, I think it's a good one!
