Pandora is the kind of book that Henry James excelled at writing. In some of his books, such as The American and Portrait of a Lady, James had shown his genius at placing protagonists where cultures and traditions clash and merge, where the Old and New Worlds meet and collide, and where a man, or a woman, caught in the mist of cultural battles can witness the differences - and, ironically, the similarities of both warring sides. We see all these in this book through the experiences of Vogelstein, a count who undertakes a journey from his native Germany to the USA. The count's study begins immediately the moment he takes the ship to the New World and where he meets Pandora Day, who, like him, also goes through a journey of discovery only in reverse. In the process of his "education", the count learns that the heart could easily be a student as well as the mind. As he learns more about Pandora, and falls for her, he realizes that in the process of gaining education he can also lose a part of himself. Henry James is not easy to read - at least in my experience he isn't. His works can be highly topical. In some cases, he declares rather than show. But this book is very readable. His account of Vogelstein's transition is quite captivating. James knew the pains and successes of life for those who live in a different environment. Perhaps this is because he was in the know? James himself had undergone some of Vogelstein's experiences. This, in turn, I can very much relate to. This is perhaps the reason why this book made quite an impression on me. I know what it's like to live in countries so very much unlike from one another.

El conde Otto Vogelstein se lleva una sorpresa al conocer a Pandora Day, que le obliga a replantearse lo que él creía desde un principio.
