Written originally in 1935 by Lindquist himself, fully revised by Blommers in 1977, and out-of-print by 1983, this book is xeroxed and sells for $45, still used today in Intro to Statistical Methods in the U of Iowa College of Education. Warning readers that modern computers can't tackle statistical mathematics and those pesky punch cards, this book is an abomination to all that is the 21st century.

Possibly the best articulation of the history and context of Literacy available; should be mandatory reading for anyone who cares about the discussion of literacy and who wants some clear-thinking by folks who have a legacy of literacy research and advocacy.
