Fairly disappointing. I was expecting something which would give me more of a sense of what Moscow is like as a town. Instead we get a selection of first-hand accounts of historic events, many not without interest, but presented with little or no explanation or context. Descriptions of Tsars' coronations, battles and feasts don't really interest me, and I was also disappointed that the book doesn't cover anything more recent than the first few years of the 20th century, pre-Revolution.

I hoped that was something more or less like my own book on Rome, a guidebook focused on the past; but it wasn't ' it was a collection of stories and bits and pieces from old books, travelogues and Russian fiction where Moscow plays some kind of role, sometimes not even very prominent. An interesting collection, but perhaps the author's St. Petersburg book, which had inspired him to write this one, was more successful. As a guidebook, this one is completely useless.
