I know reading a career book published in the 80's is a fool's errand and my library rightfully got rid of it from their system, but I found it on Archive.org and I couldn't resist crossing it off my list. This was actually okay for something that old. I didn't like the format because it spent around 40 pages in the beginning talking about the history of public health and then at the end it discussed where public health could be going (it didn't really use statistics or what the political scene was like at the time so it was kind of surface level). The actual information itself was interesting. It recognized lots of different fields like dental, social work, nursing, administrative, government, education, sanitation and more. They covered lots of roles, ranging from jobs that only needed a few months of training to full doctoral programs. They had a weird debate for if nursing could count or not. They mentioned planning but they also counted it as an upcoming field so I don't know if it's what we consider planning today or if they thought of it as something else back then. I liked that they had a chapter for women and minorities in public health and talked about how the traditional female jobs get paid less or in rural areas, a man would be more likely to receive a public role just because of "tradition". They mentioned that in the 80's there were only 20 something grad schools for public health which I thought was shockingly low. Maybe this isn't going to get someone their next job but I didn't realize I had this much to say about it.

I've just read a one-star review of this book that was, to me, highly amusing. It has been one-starred because the reviewer thinks it is nothing but socialist propaganda, in other words it's going to lead toddlers and little children straight down the Red Road to Communism. I'm pretty sure the reviewer is American since no one in Europe would actually care whether it was socialist propaganda or not, socialism being a perfectly acceptable political philosophy there. Indeed many governments have been socialist, and why not? It's only another variant of capitalism as practised. Anyway, it was an enjoyable review so if you'd like to read it for yourself it's here Leila's review
