Review # 1 was written on 2013-08-26 00:00:00 Veronica Serrato An excellent (and reasonably unbiased) history of the early 16th Century (1494-1534), not just of Italy, but of Europe, the Ottoman Empire, the New World and northern Africa, viewed from a (Florentine) Italian point of view. |
Review # 2 was written on 2020-05-15 00:00:00 Donald Walley The History of Italy, which has emerged from the pen of a statesman close to the events he describes, reflects the general attitude of the Renaissance period in history writing with his sceptical approach to the evidence contained and takes the history writing approach of humanist historians preceding himself one step further. For this reason, The History of Italy should be reconsidered as one of the most critical contemporary pieces of the entire Italian history during the period of turmoil and invasion in the early sixteenth century. It is worth to read because Guicciardini’s book draws a magnificent landscape of the Italian Renaissance. |
