This book was recommended by a graduate student I supervise. The author, Michael Wilbur, was his professor in undergrad. The book is a series of essays about Wilber's life, with a major focus on his development as a counselor and a professor of counseling. Michael Wilbur is half Native American and he uses a lot of Native American spirituality and ideas to inform his work. I found this fascinating and his essays about group counseling were especially inspiring. The book is a compilation of essays, so it was repetitive at times. This didn't bother me too much because the author's stories and insights were interesting enough to read more than once. As a counselor and a supervisor of counselors, I found this book illuminating and a pleasant departure from other counseling books I have read.

This volume might best serve as a reference text for case histories. It is way out of date considering the advances in brain science in the almost 15 years since its publication. Did not hold my attention. At all. Probably great for specific look-ups.
