Another fascinating book on one of the biggest conspiracies surrounding the Great French Revolution. Basically, a right-wing attack on those who question church, king, and society. I read vol. 1 regarding the anti-christian conspiracy and it was a humdinger! One of the biggest problems with this reprint was the fact that font must have been size 8 or so and it was old script, so the t's had weird c's on them and the s's looked like f's. I muddled through it though. Not light reading due to the txt issues, but all in all pretty quick setting that issue aside. We must remember that these 5 vols. were written as nonfiction. yet, they scream fiction. Jovan Byford, in his book "Conspiracy Theories: A Critical Introduction," talks about Barruel and Robison as the authors of conspiracies that would be the basis for contemporary conspiracies: everything from 9-11 to AIDS or Holocaust denialists. And after reading Nesta Webster from the 1920s who specifically focused in on the so-called Jewish conspiracy to take over the world as well as the Illumine and all left wing social and economic justice campaigns and revolutions, one can see the pieces of the old being revived and placed in the conspiracies of the new. She picked up and continued on where Robison and Barruel stopped in the late 1790s and early 1800s. Since I'm trying to piece together a free school class on conspiracies, reading the roots of the conspiracies that act as the backbone or framework of contemporary conspiracies, I felt there was a compelling enough reason to put myself through this muck.

Very interesting and detailed in the proofs and explanations. However, for my standard, I need to read it again to gain fuller understanding. That's how I see this book.
