Bullying is a prevalent phenomena in our society. I was bullied as a kid. I did a little bullying myself (one of the things the book points out bullying is the gift that keeps on giving, the bullied becomes the bullier). Bullying has been with us a while, just about every TV show that has kids in it has an episode about bullying, and in the new internet age bullying has evolved and has been making our nightly news. The Skinny On series is back with a new release, “The Skinny On Bullying,” a book for children, early teens, or a good reference and guide for parents to read with their children. All the usual tools of The Skinny On series are present, the stick figure drawings, Beth and Billy to help identify the problems being discussed, distilled information (although not so distilled that it’s watered down) presented in an entertaining and concise manner, plus a new character Gretchen who is an antagonistic foil to Beth and Billy. The book is a good book to be read by children or teenagers on their own, or with parents who will hopefully be able to add more information to their children’s defensive arsenal. Not only is this a highly readable book for young people, I think the parents will find the book enjoyable as well as informational, and will help keeping the communication lines open between parents and children. “The Skinny On Bullying” (like other books in the series) has commonsense advice regarding the problem and solutions that can be easily implemented by kids. To encourage children and show them that bullying is only temporary, and its ill effects can be overcome gives examples of now famous people that were bullied in their younger years. The examples are relatable to younger readers, people such as Michael Phelps, Taylor Swift, and Taylor Lautner. If you’re looking for a book that relies on facts, is entertaining, informative and doesn’t talk down to kids about bullying, I highly recommend “The Skinny On Bullying.”
