Just as we classify apples as "eating" or "baking" varieties, I differentiate between "reading" and "cooking" cookbooks. I think I can say it: this is my favorite cookbook ever. Of the reading variety. Now, I have made recipes from this, and they have been very good, but I primarily treasure this as a great read. Ann Jackson tells great stories, some true (or truthy, at least) and some starring invented (?) characters, women mostly, the kind of women who wear vintage dresses and play in rock bands (Jackson is a vintage clothes dealer too). Her voice is deep-fried Southern, and her mission is to transform beloved Southern dishes for vegetarians and vegans. Her chicken-fried tofu and gravy could change your life. This book started out as a self-published Kinko's affair. That's the version I know best. It was later published by the Book Publishing Company, the publishing arm of The Farm in Tennessee.

A VERY, VERY GOOD Southern vegan cookbook. I've never made food from a cookbook so similar to my Kentucky gramma's cooking. I recommend completely. Refrigerator rolls are divine- I made them into cinnamon rolls, added ground almond to the cinnamon/margarine part so they'd at least have a little nutritional value. Coworkers loved them.
