This is a work of love. Because over half of the North American conifer species are found in California, this guide is a treasure trove of information about conifers applicable to most of the western regions of this continent. Each tree description is an independent, integrated chapter. The fluent prose of Lanner, the large illustrations by Murman, the detailed distribution maps, and the generous number of color photographs make this read a series of accessible, enjoyable journeys.

If you want a comprehensive, yet accessible guide to the "Conifers of California", then look no further than Ronald Lanner's excellent book on the subject. The book is organized taxonomically and covers the many pines, cypresses, firs, and other conifers found in the golden state. Each species is accompanied by a short description of the history of the identification of the species, discussion of any issues surrounding the validity of species, a description of its range and habitat, and guides to identifying the species. The book also has many gorgeous illustrations and photographs to help familiarize readers with each species. Perhaps the only downside of the book is that it is relatively large in dimension and therefore not well-suited as a field guide. I enthusiastically recommend the book to any Californian who enjoys the outdoors and wants to learn more the many wonderful conifers found in our state.
