I moved to Nuneaton in 2007 and I always like to know a bit of the local history. I found this one at the local library. It was good in that it covered a large period, from the initial Anglo Saxon settlement to the modern town. I feel I have a better idea of how the town developed and got to where it is now. What was missing was the human stories. There were some, but they were often taken from old sources and not explained for the modern reader. For instance, in court cases from the 14th century, what does it mean for someone to be in "mercy"? I don't mind having the original source quoted, but fleshing it out and giving context to the modern reader would have been helpful. Also helpful would have been more maps, maybe laying out the ancient town versus the modern layout so you could see where everything was. He states where everything was, but having a visual reference would have been helpful. Otherwise it was an interesting read.

Can we justify our deeply held moral beliefs as valid in a deterministic, post-modern world? Haskell the historian here wrestles honestly with his own commitment to progressive values and his knowledge as an historian that such values are the product of historical conditioning. And he does it in clear prose that we ordinary readers can comprehend, not post-modern mishmash.
