Elsa Gidlow was a badass. She was a lesbian, a poet, an anarchist, and a feminist, in the early 20th century before she was aware of others like her. If anyone read Erik Davis' "Visionary State," which I reviewed on Goodreads last Fall, you may recognize her name from the section on Druid Heights, the radical Buddhist hippie community she founded in Marin County when she squatted a derelict house in Fairfax in the 1940's. She's my new hero.

Elsa Gidlow's autobiography is the inspiring story of a woman who lived her life exactly the way she wanted to in a time when it wasn't okay for women to be individuals. Freedom, love and creativity are just a few of the subjects that Elsa brings to the table. A brilliant book.
