Events of book take place in 1990's Vietnam and go to show that things change but things stay the same. Little vignettes about the author's life here and would probably be a worthwhile read in preparation for someone coming to Vietnam for the first time (particularly if coming to work/life there). For those who have lived in Vietnam, like myself, it was a book I found myself saying "yep, that's about right." to a lot. While not necessarily a bad thing, it brought nothing really new or astounding to the table (hence the recommendation for those who are looking to understand Vietnam on a personal/emotional level before coming here or perhaps after a short visit). Good evocative writing about the whole experience however.

An objective look at Vietnam, it's history, culture, and survival amid colonialization, war, and rebuilding.
