Review # 1 was written on 2012-11-17 00:00:00 Gary Stavropoulos If you are looking for a one-volume resource on the Wisdom Literature, then look no further than this volume. Yes, there are others out there. And, to be fair, some will be better. However, one of the values of this commentary is that it brings together those excellent resources in a balanced conversation that allows the reader to fully understand the complex world of the sages. Bland carefully walks the reader through the text of Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and the Song in an effort to illuminate these often (and unnecessarily) troubling texts. His goal, however, is not to answer the question of meaning or interpretation. His goal is to clarify what wisdom truly is...learned application. These teachings are only as true as we express them in our own lives. I especially appreciated Bland's section on Ecclesiastes because he carefully and expertly navigates that chasm between pessimism (often associated with the book) and optimism (yes, some see it that way) to present a clear argument for realism. There is much here about life, especially for non-Christians to begin their journey toward God.
