Review # 1 was written on 2015-02-13 00:00:00 Jacob Kingsly Periodically I pick up “Grace-the Heart of the Fire” to re-read. It was gifted to me in 1992 by a dear friend who came to understand God’s grace through reading Milton Jones offering. God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense is the perfect acronym. It must be received. A true gift. Jones takes the reader through common beliefs about Grace, do you earn it, does God grade on a curve, does it really mean freedom and so on. In one chapter there is a yellow highlight (this is no longer done to my books) from my first read : “The question should never be how close can I get to sin without sinning. Rather, our focus should be on how close can I get to God. This is the response of grace.” We are gonna get to the line, we are gonna step over it, but let’s not run from Gods grace by testing the line! While Jones is a church of Christ minister, it is not a heavy handed read guiding to the c of C. In fact, the church of Christ has been known to not teach grace to this extent so Jones is letting them know it’s real, it’s good to talk and think about. The author occasionally reflects on the spectrum found in the (most) churches of degrees of legalism and of liberalism. His chapter on determining if an issue is a Swing or Fire is pure gold. We can disagree on a myriad of things but still maintain the Gospel as foundation. Great read to spark meditation or discussion.
