I’ve read a number of homemaking books, and they usually leave me feeling discouraged. This one was different. Perhaps because it was by a man, perhaps because it focused on the theology of home, more descriptive than prescriptive? I’m not sure, but I found this book to be inspiring and it made me appreciate my home more.

This book is a timely reminder that every little thing in life, from entertaining company to talking to your sister to cooking a meal, is a reflection of the ultimate purpose in life: offering your life for others in love. When we are in touch with that reality, then we are satisfied and fulfilled by our daily work and leisure. When we ignore and deny the call to give, then we are stuck in a frustrating and lonely world. Thomas Howard is bluntly honest about everything that goes on these days in the kitchen, living room, bedroom, and even bathroom. In walking through each room of our house, he is really taking us on a tour of our family, our schedule, or journey on this Earth, and showing us how to live every moment in the presence of the eternal mystery of love.
