This is an older style devotional book from the late 80's. I found it quaint and homey. As far as devotional thoughts go it offered some good reminders in caring for one's inner life. I found it just okay.

Really good chapter on Humility Thomas a Kempis: A true understanding and humble estimate of oneself is the highest and most valuable of all lessons...We are all frail;consider none more frail than yourself. Francois Fenelon All the saints are convinced that sincere humility is the foundation of all virtures. That is because humility is the daughter of pure love. Samuel Taylor Coleridge: The devils's darling sin is pride that apes humility. "Perhaps that is why the Lord never tells us in His Word that we are to pray for humility. Instead we are to humble ourselves (2 Chronicles 7:14 which is quite a different thing Fred Smith: Humility is not denying the power you have, but admitting that the power comes through you and not from you." (41) God has a weapon that can change pride to humility in an instant of time. The apostle Peter named this weapon the "fiery trial." It can bring about exposure, failure, humiliation, disgrace, the collapse of our carefully-built plans, the wiping out of our ambitious goals-everything in fact that we dread. Such an occurrence can prove to be a blessing; it may drive us straight into the castle to meet with our Lord (43) Love this prayer: God of Orion and the Pleiades, who scatters the proud in the imagination of their hearts, hear the cry of your servant. I don't just want to be known as a humble person-I really want to be one. That being the case please do what is necessary. I'd like a one-on-one interchagne with You at the cross; nothing else seems to work.
