Review # 1 was written on 2011-05-03 00:00:00 Remington Chapman After reading for months, I finally finished this on vacation. If you want 500 pages that explains that neither the founding fathers nor the populace really intended for the First Amendment to be broadened (beyond its words) to require complete separation of religion from government, but that Know-nothings, the KKK, Masons, nativists, protestants and other "progressives" came together to advocate the "wall of separation," first mentioned by Jefferson in an off-hand letter to some Baptists, as a way to thwart the takeover of the union by the Pope, then this is your book. If you'd prefer to spend the time on other things, memorize what I just said, and consider yourself sufficiently apprised of the matter. You will, however, miss an impressive display of scholarship and some immensely interesting historical context on a subject that is misunderstood by about everyone, esp. all those religious leaders who, through the years, advocated complete separation without any thought that that might mean the end of Bible study in the schools. Bless their hearts.

At least, that is, if they hope to have any understanding of the vision of the Founding Fathers for this country. This is the authoritative work on the subject.
