rating: 2.5 While I'm sure this book may appeal to kids, it's not for me. The message is too blatant, and the snow people are too exquisite (i.e., too realistic to be created quickly by non-artists).

There is a lot going on in this book, and that's a very good thing. Younger readers will really enjoy the various snow figures and the fun that the townspeople have in making them. Older readers will appreciate the artistry of the illustrations and the deeper messages in the story: Appreciate what you have while you have it, because things change and may go away. And don't waste the now worrying about the future to the point where you don't appreciate what's right in front of you. Life, loss, and rebirth are the central themes of a sweet story that is sure to be a winter-time favorite for almost any family.
