Review # 1 was written on 2011-11-28 00:00:00 Gordon Tunstall This is a dense, hard-to-follow (at least for me) book. Having said that, there is a worthwhile insight or two in it. The key idea seems to be that martyrdom (whether it be the almost-martyrdom of Isaac or later martyrdoms) is not merely an inspiring story, but part of human nature. As the author notes, "religious man dares to long for a dramatic, heroic moment of action" to escape his day-to-day burdens and achieve perfection. |
Review # 2 was written on 2017-05-25 00:00:00 Damion Dunlap In some parts it could have been more profound and broader in scope, in others it is perfect. I liked the personal stories which represent the micro-history of New Mexico. All in all, a book worth reading as a primer for those interested in the history and culture, and unique circumstances, of New Mexico. |
