Actually, quite a decent primer, featuring a selection of primary source material and essays on 'urban problems' from colonial times to the LA riots. Continuing to develop my foundational understanding of 'metropolitan' / 'urban' / whatever-the-buzzword-of-the-time-is policies, politics, and outcomes. Not bad for a textbook, but certainly not something I'd expect most lay people to slog through.

Disappointingly thin. I love Gail Godwin and was hoping for more...something deeper and a lot more personal. After the very shallow survey of religion (the Hinduism section was appalling), I just skimmed. I probably missed something good, but she asked for it. Because I didn't read carefully, I'm being generous with my stars. Also, it's Godwin, and I do love so many of her books.
