Eerie timing to have finished this on the day of Dr. Gardner's death. As with all collections of essays, some are more helpful than others. Stand-outs include Robert Smith's "Preaching as a Contemplative Theological Task," James Earl Massey's "Composing Sermons That Sing," Cleophus J. LaRue's "Pulpits Without Purpose," Martha Simmons and Brad Braxton's "What Happened to Sacred Eloquence?," and Cheryl J. Sanders' "The Measure of Prophetic Ministry." I think the approach of teaching preaching through the lens of an extraordinary preacher is infinitely more helpful and interesting than any preaching text book I've had to read.

After reading this book, I'm mainly interested to read/listen to some Gardner C. Taylor sermons. Had I done so prior to reading this book, I probably would have appreciated it more. Most of the chapters examine one aspect of preaching (creativity, singularity, etc.). Some of the contributions were repetitive, others were enlightening. I thought some of the chapters on prophetic preaching were very helpful including: David G. Buttrick, "When Preachers Preach, Does God Speak?" Richard Lischer, "Anointed with Fire: The Structure of Prophecy in the Sermons of Martin Luther King, Jr." Martha Simmons and Brad R. Baxton, "What Happened to Sacred Eloquence (Celebrating the Ministry of Gardner C. Taylor)" Robert Smith, Jr., "Preaching as a Contemplative Theological Task."
