Review # 1 was written on 2014-02-09 00:00:00 Renee Ramos An ethnographic study of the dying genre of appalachian Christian radio. Description of this genre contrasts with Frankl's description of televangelism. These stations/shows are committed to the content, not the revenue. In fact, the author explicitly argues that televangelism and the appalachian airwaves have almost nothing in common. The radio shows' message is repetitive and focused on doctrine. Perhaps because of these decisions, the genre is not able to continue in a changing medium. The author emphasizes their "commitment to message" and they are driven by "something other than money." The hosts are highly optimistic and are not just interested in next life, but believe God's blessings can be felt now (208). |
