Personal Response I really enjoyed reading the book called Drugs and Sports. This book provided me with a variety of new, useful information. It goes over why athletes use drugs, how they get away with it, and how the rest of the world reacts to it. I am glad that I found this informational text. I will definitely share this book with others. Plot/Summary During the human existence, the chances are that you will come across a situation involving drugs. This can happen at any part of your life, and may come up often if you are an athlete. Drug habits can form at any age. During a poll of high school athletes, 60% of the athletes admit to using some sort of drug within the past month. The most overlooked drugs are nicotine and alcohol. High school athletes do not respond well in peer pressure situations. Even as you go up the levels, the pros have substance addictions as well. Professional athletes often have a lot of money and free time. This can sometimes turn into drug use, as many athletes use cocaine. Professional athletes are kids idols. If the youth sees that athletes at the professional level are doing drugs, they will be more likely to try these and become a user. There have been many successful athletes on drugs, but after they have been caught, their accomplishments are looked at as less of than the ones that are earned naturally. There are many drugs being abused in sports at all ages. These are drugs all of kinds: performance enhancing drugs such as steroids, uppers, downers, and all of the in between. If athletes are getting tested for drugs, there could be many positives and negatives. For example, if half of the nba was drug tested and the best players are gone, the NBA will be boycotted. On the other hand, this may prevent the youth from ever experimenting with drugs. Professional sports trainers and agents should be aware of what they are doing and putting into their athletes. Sometimes even coaches have no clue what their athletes are doing. Other times, coaches want their best players back, so they are okay with them using illegal substances to make their team perform better. Even trainers lie, and may be harming the athletes career without them knowing. Imagine your local sports physician giving you cocaine but guaranteeing to you that it was ibuprofen. Professional athletes are still liable for what they do and intake, as well as their actions on and off of the playing stage. Characterization Drug - a medicine or other substance which has a physiological effect when ingested or otherwise introduced into the body. Sport - an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment. Review and Recommendations I give this book a four out of five stars. I have learned a lot of information that I will use in my life. I recommend this book to boys and girls over the age of 14 that are in sports. This information will be valued, in hope that our youth sports will stay drug free for their lives. I hope that this book reaches out to people and they understand the awful risks of using drugs. I will be sure to recommend end this book to a friend.

Having read the original version (not revised), which ends before the LA'84 Olympics, must say that even though it sounds a bit outdated it keeps addressing timeless aspects of sports which can be applied to yesterday, today and tomorrow, even in Europe, where I am from. Can't wait to get a cheap copy of the "revised" edition. Caveat: the book focuses on the football, baseball and basketball Holy Trinity of American sports. That said, it is mainly concentrated on baseball and football, not basketball. Don't be surprised if Kareem-Abdul Jabaar or Wilt Chamberlain appear as mere names, not main characters.
