This book's primary message is that a company should above all focus on making profits responsibly, legally and ethically, but that corporate philanthropy is an important tool that can help advance business interests in the long term. It is a mechanism that can help companies attract and retain talent (supporting professional development), strengthen the brand (facilitating positive publicity), generate innovation (supporting local education institutions) and expand markets and business relationships (providing networking opportunities). Corporate philanthropy is unique in that it consists not only of financial contributions to non-profits, but also of donations of employee time and company resources such as vehicles, office space, etc. This requires an integrated giving approach with a commitment across a company to advocate, participate and witness the channelling of community support. This necessitates giving guidelines to be transparent and support to be provided over a longer term by establishing collaborative partnerships. This also requires a fine balance between continuity and innovation, internal business interests and community needs, local and international interests, and personal and common interests. For beneficiaries some helpful guidance is provided to attract corporate funding. Understanding a company and the areas of mutual interest, building a strong network of supporters, specifying a clear and compelling case, establishing measurable results, maintaining regular communications, delivering benefits through discounts, demonstrating broad financial support and respecting the time of executives are some best practices. Corporate philanthropy will by its nature primarily focus on localized issues of the middle and working class rather than of the poor in the areas of greatest need. It is estimated that only about 10 to 15% of the US philanthropic support directly helps the poorest Americans. For context, in 1996 of the $150.7b in financial donations, corporations contributed 6%, foundations 7% and individuals 87%, however federal, state and local governments spent $2.5t to support social causes. Corporate philanthropy needs to be seen as playing its own unique and important part in supporting social causes, even if they may be narrowly concentrated in the areas of education, health / human services, arts and culture, and civic and community affairs.

Buku ini lebih kepada orang umum yang nak melabur dalam PE dan kebanyakan yang ditulis adalah pada paradigma orang umum dan bukan orang yang melaburkan duit.
