Review # 1 was written on 2013-08-04 00:00:00 Mike Bruns The Schroeders seem to have missed the satire in Eleanor's Victory entirely. Braddon is playing with a Female Quixote story, in which her invocation of "womanliness" is always tinged with irony. She gives us that "happy" domestic ending because it's what melodrama demands/it's Eleanor awakening into the "reality" that Victorian society demands of her. Strangely, too, Schroeder refuses to believe that Eleanor actually loves Monckton. I'm not really sure why this is even an issue. Their whole reading is fundamentally off. |
