Review # 1 was written on 2011-03-25 00:00:00 Michaeal Trask I just started this book and finished the beginning interviews. I LOVE it so far. Noam Chomsky is super interesting in his critique of the Western educational system, for starters. Can't wait to keep reading. |
Review # 2 was written on 2010-08-14 00:00:00 Chris Shallicker A must for any radical "educator", student, or anyone related to the education field. Presented in a dialogue fashion, commentators respond to ideas and notions put forth by Chomsky. My particular favorite commentary is "Beyond Education", for it reveals the misnomer of "indigenous education" and reveals a very real need to decolonize our most intimate minds. Indigenous populations see living as learning, and this compulsory education system we've set up here is a structure created and enforced by the capitalist markets system. Even the word "education" was only first mentioned in a French text in the late 1600s, and in English nearly 150 years later. As a teacher in this very contrived system, I am forced to teach in the capitalist framework in order to promote liberation education. That is to say, I teach in the system to dismantle the system. These dissenting voices to individualism thriving in our capitalist society represent and are another possible world of comunalidad - a communal way of life (but this too is not easily translated in English). These voices must be heard!!! |
