Review # 1 was written on 2013-05-08 00:00:00 Tony Sall This is a biography of a man took part in the settling of the Platte and points west and north in the latter 1860's. He worked for Mr Leighton, who was setting up the sutlers stores on the Bozeman trail to Montanas gold fields. Forts C.F.Smith, Phil Kearny and such. He took part in the Hayfield fight. The only good description of that fight is here. he took part in many fights with Indians. Later, he took a job on the Shoshoni Reservation and became friends with Chief Washakie. it is quite an exciting read of those times. Burnett was alive when this was written, the author went over his writing s with him. |
Review # 2 was written on 2017-05-22 00:00:00 Sheal Recto History reads well when it follows the life of one person. Though this book has shortcomings, such as a lack of exact dates, the story makes it easy to understand what the western frontier was like. Finn happened to be present at many historic events and could give an eye witness account of them. Though various native tribes are described as savages, this was a typical attitude of the time. Finn did go on to develop an abiding, positive relationship with the Shoshoni and their chiefs. After additional digging, I found out that he was also the great-grandfather of U.S. Senator Alan Simpson. |
