I received this book as a gift when I first moved to the area years ago, but I never really used it much because I couldn't really get a handle on the format. I wanted something with an easier rating system and more narrative descriptions, something more akin to Tom Sienestra's Foghorn/Moon guides. I recently blew the dust off The Tahoe Sierra, though, and now that I have taken the time to read and understand it, I find it to be a superior trail guide. I like it so much, in fact, that when my first copy recently got ruined due to a leaky tent, I immediately bought another copy. Last night I read through all of the introductory material, and found it extremely interesting and educational. I have only two complaints about the book: first, the "wildflower plates" are virtually useless, being in black and white...there are several far superior, color nature guides to use; these photos just seem to waste space in the trail guide. Secondly, my new copy is "updated" as of 2001, which only consists of a new appendix that points out a few changes in the original text. This is less than helpful, and I wish the publisher would fork out the dough for a true update.

A no nonsense history of a nasty element.
