I've had this one on my bookshelf for a while, and it got there because I was interested in learning more about my granddad's favorite singer, whom I only knew as the banjo picker on Hee Haw who occasionally told the audience "what's for supper." In contrast to many up-and-coming autobiographers today, this book was written and published in 1984, with most of Grandpa Jones' life behind him, although he did live another 14 years after it was published. So, in that sense, it is a fairly complete representation of his life in the public eye. Found out a couple of things I didn't know, including the fact that Grandpa Jones went through a divorce in his younger years, wrapped around the time that he served in World War II. I can't imagine the anguish and heartache of a broken relationship that seemed severed before he left for service, and then was completely dissolved upon his return. I also didn't realize that he began his "Grandpa" persona at the young age of 22, due to the sound of his voice and the interpretation of it by his fans. Although he sometimes played up the part with a fake mustache and costume, most of his "appearances" at that time were on the radio. What I really enjoyed most was Grandpa's poetry and stories from the old days, and even for that era, it seems that he was an old soul. It's interesting to read his concerns about the popularization of country music and how the singers weren't country enough in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Forty years later, the same rumblings are still heard and spoken among country music fans. And although much of the humor here was either inside jokes or generational anecdotes that I wasn't able to get, I did like the old sayings and catch phrases from that era, such as "my feathers fell when he said that," and "we were poor as Job's turkey." This book has charm.
