The title of this revised ISU dissertation pretty much tells you what the book is about. It's fairly short (164 pp. + notes), & is divided into 4 chapters: The Farm Front, The Production Front (with over half the chapter devoted to the Burlington & Des Moines Ordnance Plants), The Community Front (bond & scrap drives, a National Guard unit, the Sullivan Brothers, memorializing the death of soldiers), and the Kitchen Front (rationing, canning, salvaging). There's not really an argument (despite the promise of one in the intro) or a narrative arc but quite a bit of interesting information.

Thanks to Spencer & Jacque Merryfield, I am more educated about the history of Wisconsin, and history is one of my favorite topics. The author was very prescient about the harmful effects of industry on nature and, perhaps, ahead of his time in his attitudes towards Native Americans. Some poetry and song lyrics are thrown in for good measure.
