This was one of the best books I have read on health care reform. It gives a very cogent over view of the ethical imperative for universal coverage, but honestly looks at the realities both economic and political in our current system. We are believers in the individual and individual rights, but must begin to look seriously at the common good. Our system is driven by the individual doctor-patient relationship, but for the health of our entire population, some will have to do with less of our high tech medical treatments. Few authors grapple as well with the issue of rationing and how it might be done in a transparent and just way instead of by ability to pay. There is also strong emphasis on the need to slow down the introduction of expensive new medical technology of marginal or no benefit, and grapple with how health care fits into other spending priorities before we have no funding for anything else at a private or public level.

I've not yet finished reading this and, although I do not entirely agree with the solutions the author proposes, it is important to look at alternatives that might improve our currently-broken healthcare system. That said, I am finding it difficult to read, style-wise, as well as because of the errors. Any copy editor that doesn't know the difference between imminent and eminent is in the wrong line of work.
