Yes, I realise it is an unseasonal read but when I saw 'Mr Men A Christmas Carol', I just couldn't resist reading about Charles Dickens, storyteller, meeting the Mr Men! The story follows Dickens' original tale with Mr Mean, appropriately, playing the part of Scrooge. His long suffering employee Bob Cratchit is played by Mr Happy and Scrooge's nephew who invites him to Christmas dinner becomes a lady whose name is Little Miss Sunshine. She duly invites Mr Mean and Mr Happy for Christmas lunch but the answer from Scrooge, sorry, Mr Mean, is 'Bah, humbug'. And Mr Happy does not like to go for he cannot afford presents to take with him. Mr Mean goes home and dines on half a tin of cold beans, because he is off on the morrow so doesn't need to waste a full tin, then goes to bed because the house is cold. In his sleep he is visited by three people, Mr Nosey, Little Miss Wise and Little Miss Bossy, each of whom showed him an aspect of Christmas in the past, present and future. When Mr Mean awakes he realises that he is mean and nasty and immediately determines to change. He goes out and buys a sledge full of presents, calls on Mr Happy and takes him to dinner at Little Miss Sunshine' house. Rather to his surprise, Mr Mean enjoyed his day and there was no further 'Bah, humbug!' I realise that I have read this title previously but having just read the original 'A Christmas Carol' I thought I would refresh my memory of this parody. And I am glad that I did for Mr Mean carries off the role of Scrooge admirably and Mr Happy and Little Miss Sunshine playing their parts equally well as Mr Nosey, Little Miss Wise and Little Miss Bossy carry off the role of spirits excellently. Mr Happy becomes Mr Sad at one point but when Mr Mean emerges from his dreams a changed man and showers him with presents for his friends, Mr Happy returns to his former state. Then when Mr Mean gives him his own Christmas present, he is thrilled to bits - even if it was only a tin of baked beans! Great fun indeed.
