Review # 1 was written on 2014-10-16 00:00:00 Judson Siegel a. This is a book about a boy named Buddy. Buddy has Down syndrome and does not fit in with other kids his age. He decides to save his money to buy a puppy to be his new friend. After he gets the puppy, Buddy realizes that the puppy can run faster than him just like the other kids. Buddy eventually learns that people are different and it's okay to be different than others. b. The theme of this book is acceptance. Buddy finally learns to accept himself and the fact that he doesn't do things the same way as others. c. I think this book would be great to use when talking about disabilities. You could have the students talk about if they know anyone that is different and name one thing they have learned from them. It would also work when trying to teach about differences and how no two people are the same.

Review # 2 was written on 2018-10-02 00:00:00 Mario Rossi It's not often you read a caterpillar/butterfly story featuring a black swallowtail, but I'm so glad Ernst's does. My students (3-5 year olds) have raised black swallowtails several times and the story gives them an opportunity to identify key black swallowtail facts (the plants they eat and live near, features of their bodies, their ability to overwinter, and so on), and yet it's all packaged in a fictional, anthropomorphic tale. Plus it offers some interesting opportunities for conversation about ability (Trixie's crimped wing), external transformation, and internal integrity.
