This book is a study on how Zoroaster influenced Western ideas, and how early Zoroastrianism evolved into modern Zoroastrianism. It rejects the idea, introduced by W.B. Henning, that Zoroastrianism was dualistic. Duchesne-Guillemin also makes note that Western scholars of Zoroastrianism have been arguing about what the religion really was about since its first discovery. The most notable arguments that Duchesne-Guillemin mentions and then details are from: Thomas Hyde, Ernst Herzfeld, Anquetil Duperron, and James Mouton. Zoroastrianism is also compared and contrasted to the early form of Judaism. Duchesne-Guillemin presents his research in an interesting fashion, and also includes evidence to support his argument on why he rejects Henning's theory. He also writes about Zoroaster's influence on the west, and how it has shaped the idea of modern religion. Duchesne-Guillemin is a talented writer, and very knowledgeable on the topic of not only Zoroaster, but Zoroastrianism.
