Review # 1 was written on 2013-03-22 00:00:00 Rebecca Whitehead It's a thorough academic study, with a genuine thesis (in other words, not an overview or a picture book), but the writing is compelling even for a layman like me. The history of Japanese gardens developed here also unfolds areas of Japanese politics, history, art, literature, culture. I bought this book, on sale from a rare book store, principally to be inspired by the plates and drawings. I was completely surprised by how fascinating, insightful and well written it was, and ended up reading it and all the footnotes in three or four days. |
Review # 2 was written on 2019-03-12 00:00:00 Patrick Hennessey Nice overview of the history of gardening in Japan as well as the principles, practices and elements of Japanese style . Not a hands-on guide but helpful in understanding the evolution of the unique Eastern feel of garden spaces. |
