It's a thorough academic study, with a genuine thesis (in other words, not an overview or a picture book), but the writing is compelling even for a layman like me. The history of Japanese gardens developed here also unfolds areas of Japanese politics, history, art, literature, culture. I bought this book, on sale from a rare book store, principally to be inspired by the plates and drawings. I was completely surprised by how fascinating, insightful and well written it was, and ended up reading it and all the footnotes in three or four days.

Nice overview of the history of gardening in Japan as well as the principles, practices and elements of Japanese style . Not a hands-on guide but helpful in understanding the evolution of the unique Eastern feel of garden spaces.
