Question 14 The author wrote this story because he want us to know that Lance Armstrong is a hero who is determined to do anything life demands. That is a life which Lance Armstrong owes to cancer and also is his choice to live strong. The author may get those ideas from the life of Lance Armstrong and then wrote the story about him. Besides that, the author is trying to share people who just like him that consider him a hero for overcoming testicular cancer and creating the Lance Armstrong to help other cancer patents. Question 15 Lance Armstrong was born on September 18, 1971 in Plano, Texas. Lance lived all of his life with his mother, Linda, who was only seventeen when poor little Lance was born. His father, a man by the name of Gunderson, took off when he was only two. His mother kept on working two jobs and finished high school. After that she got a secretarial position and moved on to Oak Cliff and found another husband named Terry Armstrong. Linda worked very hard to make sure Lance had everything; plenty of food and those clothes were clean and pressed. Also, she couldn't do anything about the friends at school. At the age of ten, Lance Armstrong began to do athletics like running and swimming lessons. Instead of being with kids at the same age, he was put with 7 year olds. It was embarrassing for someone at his age. During his senior year, the U.S. Olympic team invited him into the team. He left school temporarily. Later he attended private school to earn his diploma. The following summer, he won 11th place for the Junior World Championships of bicycle racing; the best place for Americans since 1976. In that same year, he won two major races. After a few years, he turned professional right after the Olympics. That same year he finished last in the San Sebastian Classic, his first race as a professional. On October 2, 1996, he was diagnosed with advanced testicular cancer, which had spread to his abdomen, lungs, and brain. Doctors thought that he had more than another year to live. He was operated on to remove the affected testicle and the lesions on his brain, and then began chemotherapy for the cancer cells in the abdomen and in the lungs. But he never give up on himself. Miraculously he recovered, and then came back to bike racing. He signed a contract with the U.S. Postal Service racing team. After Lance's victory in the 2005 Tour de France, he was eager to go back to Texas and be a dad. He also looked forward to more time with Sheryl. In September 2005, he proposed to her, and she agreed to marry him.
