This is possibly the most reader-friendly first course in mathematical logic you are going to find. It doesn't dawdle on propositional and predicate logic for long. Want to understand Godel's incompleteness theorems and undecidability of certain problems in the theory of computation? This is probably the quickest and most painless way to get there. The basic ideas of mathematical logic are accessible to anyone with a modest discrete mathematics education. This book won't go into general, recursive function theory, but it is a great primer in that direction. Further-reading lists provided in the book are ample to get the interested reader going, if they are so inclined. One of the highlights of this book is a discussion of computability in the "register machine" model; this is more elegant than "Turing machines" while not as abstract as recursive functions. This one is more for the theorists. A true introduction. The discrete mathematics background isn't wholly necessary, because the start of the book covers what you will need any way, given the nature of the subject. Problem is, you don't want to focus on those details; it is more important to be comfortable with the discrete math and be able to concentrate fully on the central ideas of formal number theory and computability theory. Comes with solutions to exercises so it gets my full recommendation. Out of print. Can be downloaded from libgen.io or libgen.pw if you want to get it immediately. Cheap copies are available online, but not many of them. Managed to grab a cheap one for myself before they all vanish.

A must read for children! I liked maths, but after reading this book, I fell in love with it. The beauty of numbers could not be explained in a better way. Shakuntala Devi, the genius she is, has poured out her love for numbers that begins to resonate with you. This book has been a great influence on me since my childhood and will continue to be. If mathematics could be taught the way it is written in this book, we would have a lot less children trembling just by hearing the name of maths.
