This book was written by a college mentor, James Hepburn. He wrote it in 1970 long before I met him. His insights continue to delight and challenge me today. As I struggled to complete my senior honors thesis, he was a supportive and constructive force. When I had to defend it, he spent the first 15 minutes defending me and what I had attempted to do -- write an original criticism of George Bernard Shaw's work. Among other things, the chairman of the history department considered it the height of arrogance that an undergraduate might say anything original about someone like Shaw and pure folly that Jim and ultimately an up and coming private institution like Bates would allow such a thing. Of course, he was right, but Jim was on my side and believed that my doing this would be the start of something important for me and he always stood on the side of his students learning something vs. getting something. I was awarded Honors but frankly, the honor was all mine to have had the privilege of working with such a talented, funny, committed scholar.
