What a beautiful book! Classy layout, gorgeous photos, and informative text, trimmed with the words of the native people who call the Southwest their home. When we visited the Heard Museum in Phoenix this summer, I spent a lot of time in he book store (surprise!) but was disappointed to find they didn't carry any kind of catalog or book on the museum collections. I was thinking at the time that it would have been especially useful to have a guide to the lesser-known Arizona residents and their reservations, like the comprehensive exhibit at the museum. SO the next day in the little museum store of the Pueblo Grande Museum, there was this gorgeous volume. Paging through, I immediately recognized some of the Pueblo pottery and Navajo rugs; it didn't take long to realize that many of the illustrations were photos of objects from the Heard Museum collection. But the book is much more, giving brief descriptions of the people and their culture, their prehistoric roots, historic travails, and present-day struggles to maintain their unique lifestyles in the places they call home.

There really is no reading involved. This is a cool little book with a lot of little nice paintings to look at.
