Edited by the well known and controversial political writer Francis Fukuyama this book is a preparatory manual on the shortcomings of heuristics, group think and mental short cuts. The book covers cognitive building skills to enhance the analyst's perception powers. Anticipating and expecting the unexpected are the qualities which provide top analysts with their own internal crystal ball. Part of the process entails forgetting how to think and react in the traditionally acquired sense and looking further afield. All the standard biases and regimented analytic techniques are called into question in this interesting and thought provoking work. The book is broken into four distinct sections and examine threat analysis from the past to the future and in-between. A number of outstanding authors have contributed to make this work well worth examining. It deserves pride of place on any intelligence analysts book shelf.

Fascinating book, this is a collection of essays (and debates) on the subject of strategic surprise. More than just military surprises such as Pearl Harbor and 9/11, this book delves into financial and natural disaster shocks, and what we can do to better anticipate them. One chapter included a discussion with Gregg Easterbrook, commonly known as "TMQ" (Tuesday Morning Quarterback).
