Review # 1 was written on 2020-10-25 00:00:00 Edward Edmonds I enjoyed the history of the relationship between science & Catholicism from the time of Galileo to the present day. The author is a scientist and not a historian and this shows in his his categorization of popes & cardinals as liberal and conservative. Also he does seem to favor science over metaphysics but he does summarize his points well in his reflections in the last chapter. I enjoyed the book, I singed it because of my perception of his slightly biased view and he dismissed Chesterton & Belloc in one sentence. There is a wealth of information & references for those who want to delve deeper into the relationship of Catholicism & science. |
Review # 2 was written on 2012-06-21 00:00:00 Jeffrey Lewis O'Leary gives a decent overview of trends in the Catholic Church's relationship to science in the modern era. The important, names, dates, and documents are all there. O'Leary clearly favors the progressive wing of the Church, often referring to antimodernists as "repressive" or "fearful." The writing is bland. |
