Excellent study of disasters from a variety of cultural and intellectual perspectives. Not merely a policy book, the analysis ties the book into capitalism (disaster capitalism) and politics in a convincing way.

Interesting points I was not aware of: the drop in average male height in the mid-19th century; the general perceived level of nutrition in colonial New England; the degree to which the southern colonies were population sinks. Beyond that, competently done survey of the topic.
