A little bit of information about a wide variety of subjects. (It is a bit outdated, having been published in 1989.) What I didn't like: The author downplays such realities as the devastation of the Cultural Revolution, the brutality of Tienanmen Square, the ruthless cruelty of the one-child policy. Mr. Steele seemed sorry that the workers who are free to choose do not choose to work on massive government-run projects. He actually asked, "Is [China] in danger of losing the revolutionary ideals that founded modern China?" He seems to be echoing the modern Chinese line that Mao was 80% good and only 20% not good. I understand that this book is written for middle-schoolers, but it does a dis-service to pretend that communist rule has been or can be a glowing success. |
