They've done a pretty good job with the editing for this edition. These manga shakespeares are, necessarily I suppose, heavily abridged from the complete plays, though the text is actually Shakespeare. Hamlet suffers from over-cutting. But Much Ado About Nothing seems to come out nicely: the plot is clear and accessible. I very much like Emma Vieceli's renditions of Beatrice and Benedick, who come off looking a bit less manga-y and consequently slightly more mature than some of the other characters (except I would complain that they spend too much time in chibi form, which kind of interrupts the flow at times like, say, just after Hero is jilted at the altar, disowned by her father and publically humiliated by the prince). Anyway I liked them. It reminded me how much I ALWAYS liked them, because I haven't read this play for a while; what a contrast there is between their flippant verbal sparring and their actual deep commitment to each other, with Claudio and Hero's professions of love and lack of depth. (personal note from E Wein: Beatrice was one of the conscious inspirations for Goewin. Goewin actually quotes her in A Coalition of Lions. There was a time when I considered naming my daughter Beatrice.)

The Manga Shakespeare series is consistently good. Much Ado About Nothing has great illustrations, especially the coloured ones at the start of the book. Teamed with the words of Shakespeare, what's not to like? This is not a play I've read before. I did feel sorry for Hero when she is falsely accused of betraying Claudio. I felt he acted rather badly to the situation and I'm not sure, had I been Hero, that I would have married him at the end! This would be a great start for someone who wants to get into Shakespeare as doesn't seem as daunting as reading a play.
