Review # 1 was written on 2009-06-02 00:00:00 Sara Langford The circus isn't what it used to be, and this well researched (and very well sourced) book will tell you what it takes to put on the modern extravaganzas of entertainment such as Cirque du Soleil and Big Apple Circus. Even Ringling Broths. has been forced to change, and with extensive access to the people who build the shows, Albrecht gives example after example of how the modern circus has embraced the most modern theatrical arts while still keeping the spirit of sawdust, greasepaint, and the occasional elephant. I read this book as research for a fiction piece that includes the very rare modern traveling circus, and it did help in explaining what the American public now expects to see, whether they are walking into a circus tent, arena, or Vegas hotel. |
