There are few books like it: A seven page novel with 100 pages of annotated notes (and notes on notes) that, layer by layer, fleshes out a Central European author's life and the history of his immediate family. A short, fascinating read if only for the structure, which predates David Foster's "Infinite Jest" by just a few years.

A Bohemian Youth is a series of digressions, first a short biographical memoir of the narrator's family and his childhood life, then a series of notes on the short memoir, and then the notes to the notes. With each telling, the story becomes more and more specific, even as the reader (or at least myself) loses track of what each note is referring to. The end result is a snapshot of life in a small Bohemian village in the early 20th century. The account is amusing, but if there is a greater point to the telling, it was lost on me.
