This is truly a very unique book: it is an anthology and collection of illustrations and other material that demonstrates how gynecological practice has evolved over the course of western allopathic medicine. It's well-written and contains a wealth of rare historical illustrations. Moreover, it provides a deep trove of information that should be of great use to feminist scholars in medical history, visual culture, and the social sciences regarding how female medicine has been seen through the ages—childbirth, especially—and thus the context of the female patient in the allopathic mode. It will also interest those who are practicing physicians or medical scientists per the anatomical illustrations and their historical worth.

We went to Ocracoke for our honeymoon, went back for our 5th anniversary, and I read this in preparation for our imminent trip back for our 10th! This book is over 20 years old, with some updates; but the core of the book is a history and a number of 1st person accounts, which don't go out of date. The interviews of various residents give a very good picture of the island and its issues. A special place for us!
